Professor Joy Duxbury will be giving her Professorial Lecture, ‘In defence of the indefensible: The use of physical restraint in health and social care settings – The Sequel’ on Tuesday 11 September.
Joy has been working on minimising restrictive and coercive practices in health and social care settings now for several years. This has included working with service users, staff, key organisations and policy makers. As a result, she has conducted a number of studies in this area and published widely on matters related to the use of coercion. In her inaugural lecture, Joy will explore a number of defences that are often put forward as to why we need to continue with practices such as restraint and use the growing evidence base to challenge entrenched and sometimes misguided assumptions.
The event will take place from 5pm until 7pm at Manchester Metropolitan University.
