The Restraint Reduction Network are delighted about the publication of the Mental Health Act White Paper. For a long time we have been advocating for the reduction of the use of restrictive practices. This document will go some way to addressing the inequalities people are suffering at the hands of outdated practice, cultures and legislation.
We hope that the White Paper will give people greater choices in crisis. It’s encouraging that it highlights people’s right to choice and autonomy, and sees “people as individuals, not patients”.
What we now need to see is implementation, and greater provision of community based settings.
