Last weekend (26-27 Nov) Professor Edwin Jones and Sarah Leitch led a workshop How do we put people back in control? Eliminating Restrictive Practices with Inés Guerrero Bueno and Laura Garrido from Plena Inclusion at the Plena Inclusion Congress in Seville. Over 50 people attended the workshop, many were self-advocates fighting to increase the rights of people with disabilities within their regions. Edwin and Sarah were very impressed to hear about the work taking place in Spain and the participants’ commitment to reduce all forms of restrictive practices.
The workshop was the culmination of a year of collaboration with Plena, during which the Restraint Reduction Network has facilitated a number of online workshops with Plena focused on reducing restrictive practices.
Sarah said, “The conference featured a range of international speakers with lived experience, talking about how they can regain power and control in their lives. We were pleased to see Simon Duffy from Citizen Network UK talking about the importance of love, courage, community and citizenship.
“It is a truly inclusive congress, and we can learn a lot about real inclusion from the presenters and delegates we met. It was wonderful to connect with old and new colleagues seeking to reduce restrictive practices. We look forward to continuing in to work with Plena Inclusion and learning from one another.”
