RRN Training Standards: Second Edition – March 2026 update
RRN Training Standards
Since their publication in 2019, the RRN Training Standards have provided a benchmark for training that includes a restrictive component.
Restraint can and does cause harm. Teaching someone to restrain is one of the most dangerous things we can teach someone to do and, so long as people are trained how to restrain, it is essential that a robust framework is in place around this training. Quality assurance is essential to helping keep people safe, both staff and people receiving support.
Independently evaluated by Manchester Metropolitan University in 2022, the Standards have been shown to positively impact culture around use of restrictive practices, raising the quality of training in certified organisations, and providing leverage to organisations seeking to reduce the use of restrictive practices.
The RRN Training Standards ensure training is quality assured and benchmarked against coproduced standards. The Standards set a clear intention; to ensure there is a fundamental shift in focus of training away from technique and instead on to human rights and prevention. A move from restraining well, to restraining less.
Second edition
The development of the RRN Training Standards: Second Edition is now at an advanced stage, with pilots underway in several settings. Developed to apply across six distinct sectors; in writing the second edition we have engaged widely across sectors, nations across the British Isles and with key industry bodies. Following completion of the pilots, final edits will be made, and the Second Edition will be published later in 2026.
The RRN has created a presentation to introduce the Second Edition, which can be viewed below.
